Waraku sells this session under the name Kyoto Samurai Experience. It is the only session on this site where the programme lists a cut at a target with a real blade, and it ends with zen meditation rather than photos in armour. Two practical points set it apart from the rest: cancellation is free only until 7 days before, and the venue moves on 21 October 2026.

About this session

Waraku moves to a new venue on 21 October 2026, so take the address from your booking confirmation. Free cancellation ends 7 days before the start. Children can join from 6.

How the two hours run

You change into traditional samurai clothing before the start, which is why the gate opens 15 minutes early and the session begins on the minute. An instructor demonstrates sword movements and talks about the history of the warrior class. You then practise the same movements with a wooden training sword. Then comes the cut: each guest makes one cut at a target with an iaito, a real sword used for practice. A zen meditation closes the session, and photos taken during the two hours are part of the price.

One cut is one cut. If you are hoping for a longer round of mat cutting, no session on this site offers it as a standard part of the programme.

The move on 21 October 2026

The product page announces a new location from 21 October 2026 but does not yet give the address. For any date after the move, take the address from your booking confirmation and plan the route the day before. Waraku has said that its staff can do little to help guests who cannot find the venue on the day. The product title still mentions a historic samurai residence; this site checks after the move whether the new venue matches it.

Cancellation, rules and what to bring

Free cancellation ends 7 days before the start. At every other session on this site, the window closes 24 hours before. Book once your Kyoto dates are fixed.

Bring comfortable shoes and clothing. Smoking, food and drinks, alcohol and chewing gum are not allowed during the session, and minors must come with an adult. The product page excludes children under 6 and people over 95.

The session ends quietly rather than with a photo shoot, and a morning slot leaves the rest of the day for the city. The decision guide sets it against the other sword sessions.

Guests at the old venue

Both reviews describe the house Waraku used before the move on 21 October 2026. One guest wished it had been better kept, the other would have liked a little more training time.

“It felt authentic, very well planned and conducted. To be able to hold a 650 years old katana felt like and honor and privilege, the training could have been a bit longer but it was not rushed at all. There was time for questions …”
Marika · Poland · September 2026 Sword and Zen · Waraku
“It was a well-managed and wonderful experience! I wish the historic house had been better preserved, but the activity overall was amazing and thoughtfully put together !”
Farhan · United States · October 2026 Sword and Zen · Waraku
